When life takes everything from us, where do we turn? For one mother who lost her parents and husband, the answer was right in her own community.
Left to raise her kids alone on $3.75 a day, Mohm faced tough choices. Should she put her kids in an orphanage and leave for a better-paying job in Thailand? She chose to stay and reached out to her Village Hive.
Unlike other charity projects, the Village Hive is committed to strengthening public resources instead of creating separate, private systems. With Village Hive support, local leaders provided her kids with everything they needed to attend Village Hive-supported public schools—uniforms, school books, and even meals to keep them focused and fuelled.
The Village Hive’s after-school care program, originally run as a private CCT initiative, is now embedded in local public schools and is open to all families. The program offers meals, tutoring, and even computer lessons—a huge relief for parents who need a safe, supportive space for their children after school.
What’s beautiful about this is how sustainable it is. Families who can afford it pay a small fee, which helps offset the costs for families still finding their feet. It’s a way of bringing the community together and building support in a way that lasts.
Now, with support from her Village Hive, Mohm is planning to start her own street food business that will allow her to stand on her own. This is exactly what the Village Hive stands for: empowering families to thrive within their community and building strength and resilience from the inside out.
It’s a story of hope, made possible by investing in the public systems that lift everyone.
